The Rhythm of the Sea

by Cameron

"Wish I was ocean size, no one moves you, no one tries,
I was born with a heart of stone, to be broken with one hard blow,
I’ve seen the waves, crash on the shore, come together with no harm done."

 -   Perry Ferrell

The magnetism of the sea on human psyche is undeniable. People flock to the sea, swim in the healing water, learn to surf, dream about sailing. The romantic imagery surrounding the sea is as ancient and varied as the collective sub-concious itself. Like a sea of dreams, crashing, conflicting, tempting one ever over the horizon.

Bird watching school week in Tahuata

by Cibele

This time spent in Tahuata gave us the opportunity to work with the local school. We went on a week of bird watching with teacher Valérie and some of the students, in order to learn more about the region where they live.

Off the dock

by Cameron

Blue sky sailing to the Galapagos
Getting off the dock:

The hardest part of any journey is leaving. Getting the bags packed, making sure the bills get paid, getting to the airport on time…  And so it is with sailing, times 10.

Living the adventure!

Balboa Yacht Club, located right at one of the ends of the Panama Canal.
Bridge of the Americas on the right handside.

by Cibele

So here we are: Balboa Yacht Club, Panama City.

Tomorrow is our estimated departure date! A couple of days in an island about 50 miles away, cleaning the boat, stocking some green bananas, relaxing and waiting for the good weather window, and here we go!

During the past month, the rythm has been intense. Lots of work on the boat, a long haul-out, trying to dance along with many unexpected incidents, going shopping in urbanly crazy Panama City, and well, getting through this first part of our trip! Like a fellow once told us: "An adventure is not a vacation, guys!"

Yes, our adventure has already started!

Captain's Intro

by Cameron

Ahoy, and welcome to our blog – the adventures of S/V Malia as we make our way back to the South seas. Part fact, part philosophy, some photos, and a few tall tales. As for me, a travelogue from a life well lived:  40 Years, 50 countries, 30,000 sea miles, countless islands, adventures of magic and wonder.

But, first things first, let’s get some perspective:
