Bird watching school week in Tahuata

by Cibele

This time spent in Tahuata gave us the opportunity to work with the local school. We went on a week of bird watching with teacher Valérie and some of the students, in order to learn more about the region where they live.

One of our “missions” was to look for the endemic bird from the island: the pahi. We were guided by Tohetia, “Mister Pahi”, the man in the island responsible for informing about the pahi and instructing every person that wants to come and research about it.

In the end, Valérie and I worked on a video with the photos and videos Cameron and I had taken throughout the week. We got to present it to the parents that came on the last day to see their final presentation. They were all very happy to see what their kids had done in the week, a first for them, and everybody learned a bit more about the place where they live. Everybody was super excited about it all and we were happy to be there with them.

The video montage now is with the school and teachers and will keep on being shown to the other kids that didn’t take part of the experience, as a learn and motivation tool for all.

I was very happy to get involved with the local community a bit more. It is incredibly nourishing and energizing.

We had a great time with them and keep on having good moments here.
